Arlene C. Wells
My formal education in the arts began in 1981, when my family and I moved to Saudi Arabia. During our five years there, I took classes taught by other ex-patriots in painting and drawing. We traveled extensively and I visited museums and galleries across Europe, Asia, and the United States.
Upon returning to the States in 1986, I enrolled in college courses involving not only the fine arts but also graphic design. I taught the basics of drawing and painting to both children and adults for five years for the Seminole Community School.
I am first and foremost a painter. My chosen medium is acrylic for the intense color and quick drying time. Sometimes I prepare my canvases with a textured medium such as sand. This rough surface showcases the dry brushwork I often do and allows layers of color to show through. I also most often work on a black gessoed surface, from rich darks to bright lights. Color drives my work and is the real subject of any painting I do.
