Bob got his first “exposure” to photography at the age of five when, on a stepstool of his Dad’s darkroom, he witnessed the miracle of an image literally coming to life before his eyes.  He’s had a camera at his side ever since.  Bob learned early on to listen to that inner voice that told him when something was worth stopping to photograph.  Composition came naturally to him, and that carried him through his Air Force tour in Germany in the early 80’s, where he developed his passion for roaming the streets and countryside of Europe with a camera. 

 

He began his professional career in 1992, quickly “developing” a style that revealed a person’s authentic side, combined with an expertise in artificial lighting, often mixed with existing lighting that corporations, hospitals and universities find integral to the success of their marketing and advertising campaigns.  In more recent years, his mastery of light, his intuitive reflexes, and his innate technical knowledge result in award winning images that are captured in the moment.  Whether Bob is photographing an urban moment, a scenic vista, a newborn baby or a corporate exec, he uses a technique he calls, “opportunistic photo-journaling.” 

 

Thompson currently owns Thompson Studios, located in Tampa, Florida, with his wife and business partner Kim.   He photographs a mix of fine art, artistic portraiture and commercial and advertising work for local, national, and international clientele. 

 

As an artist, Bob looks forward to continuing his current path, traveling in the USA and abroad to capture moments that can only be caught while combing the backstreets of the world’s most intriguing and enchanted locations.
